One important distinction: smooth, rounded river rock looks great but packs slightly tighter, while angular washed rock (sometimes sold as 3/4" or #57 drainage stone) leaves more open space for water. For purely functional drainage under the surface, angular washed rock drains best; for visible features, larger 1–3" river rock is the usual choice.
How much rock for a French drain
French drains are estimated per foot of trench. The method:
- Multiply trench width × depth (both in feet) to get cubic feet per linear foot.
- Multiply by the trench length to get total cubic feet.
- Convert to cubic yards or tons with the calculator, then subtract a little for the volume the perforated pipe takes up.
Example: a trench 1 ft wide × 1 ft deep × 20 ft long is 1 × 1 × 20 = 20 cubic feet, or about 0.74 cubic yards. A 4-inch perforated pipe displaces roughly 1.7 cubic feet over that length, so order for about 18 cubic feet of stone plus a small overage.

For any sub-surface drainage, line the trench and wrap the stone and perforated pipe in permeable landscape fabric. The fabric passes water but blocks soil and roots — and a clogged-with-silt drain is the single most common reason French drains stop working. Slope every drainage run so water moves away from structures, ideally at least a slight, consistent grade toward the outlet.
Drainage feature vs hidden drain
If you want drainage that also looks intentional, build a dry creek bed — a visible, rock-lined channel that handles runoff while reading as a landscape feature. For a hidden solution, a buried French drain with washed rock is the workhorse. Both use river rock; they just put it to different use.
